How To Tell When It's Time To Replace The CV Joints In Your Automobile

Blog

If you operate a passenger vehicle with front-wheel drive it's highly likely that you have constant velocity (CV) joints in your automobile. The CV joints attach to the drive shaft and make it possible for your car to gain traction the moment you shift gears into the "Drive" position. When all is well, you probably give little thought to the CV joints because so much attention is placed on other aspects of the vehicle. However, while the CV joints may be physically small when compared to the engine or transmission, they play a huge role in keeping your car on the road. If you ever notice any of the following red flags while you're putting around town it may be time to get to a technician to have your CV joints replaced.

You Hear A Popping Sound When You Drive

There are usually two sets of CV Joints:  One set is outer while the other is inner. The inner CV joints connect the transmission to the drive shaft. The outer CV joints connect the drive shaft to the wheels. The word 'joint' typically brings to mind the joints that you have in your own body. If you imagine the way your own knees act as a connecting point between your thighs and legs, you'll have a fuller picture of why a popping noise could be the result of faulty CV joints.

In the same way that lubrication is necessary to keep your knees from "popping" as you walk, a lack of torque can bring about the same phenomenon in your CV joints. If you start to hear a loud popping sound every time you mash the gas pedal to pick up speed, it could mean that your CV joints have cracked because there is no torque and it's time to have one or more of them replaced.

Your Car Pulls To Either Side

Faulty CV joints can also affect the alignment of your vehicle. If the joints on one side of the car have deteriorated you may find the automobile pulling to the opposite side of the road when you are behind the wheel. The excessive power on one side is canceling out the weakness of the other side so you need to have this replaced immediately!

Replacing your CV joints should most definitely make your driving experience much more pleasurable. When these signs appear, contact an auto service technician to schedule a CV joint replacement.

what does the oil light on your car mean?

Well, my daughter apparently didn't know that it meant that you should stop driving the car and get it into a repair shop immediately. My daughter continued to drive the car without telling me that that little light was on. She said that she thought that it was on for about three weeks before her car died along the road. What damage does that cause? How expensive are those repairs? Visit through our blog of repairing the vehicle that was once perfect but died because that little light was ignored.
